Occasionally on the forum, I've seen 08' and earlier Fender P basses called not as good as newer one's. I own an 07' and an 09', although I do notice different components in both basses such as bridge, tuners, etc, I don't feel or hear a major difference between the two.

What's the deal with 08' and earlier?

It's 07 and earlier. In 2008 fender stepped up their game and the overall quality of their US made basses really improved. That's not to say that you can't find a good bass pre 2008, but it would appear that there are less lemons in the bunch since 08.

Any specifics? I'm in the market for a Jazz bass body (I don't like the thin necks, so I'm going to have a warmoth one made).

I'm finding a bunch of pre 07' ones used, for good prices. Anything I should look for?

Thinner finish on the 08 and later models as well as high mass bridge and improvements to the neck. I know that the 2012 US Fenders now come stock with the custom shop pickups. There are several threads on TB about the 08 and newer US Fenders. I would imagine if you are buying a body then chances are you should do alright regardless of the year of manufacture. I would just check the weight to make sure you don't end up with a boat anchor.

Thanks. I'm browsing the Warmoth site right now, and I might just have a body built and buy my own electronics.

    Thanks for the info.

I hear you. There are so many nice parts available out there that eventually I am going to put something together myself. Good luck with your project.
