I just got word of a significant windfall coming my way in the New Year. Should I buy a modest new bass or put down a deposit on a Lull or maybe a Sadowsky?

A new bass might be a MIM Fender Dimension V, MIM Fender Reggie Hamilton Jazz, Skyline 55-64, DJ5, or 55-01, or a Carvin PB5 P/MM, or J/J B50.

Last, but not least, I am always interested in a used Cirrus 5 at a good price!

Personally, I'd drop a deposit with Nino for a passive P/J 5 like this.

  5. I'd put a deposit on something nicer. Settling for cheaper always results in disappointment or flogging it off in a months time.

Put a deposit down on your dream bass. Step back for a minute, decide on all of the features that would go into that bass, then go for it. I did that when I bought my custom Alembic some 12 years ago and the bass is still going really strong. I'll never sell it. I'm now doing the same thing with a NYC Sadowsky. I expect the same results.

They make some of the most beautiful basses around.
If it takes me all of next year, I'm getting one.

$1000 would be a great down payment on a Roscoe, which is a forever bass. If you get a $1000 bass, you'll just always be wanting something like a Roscoe or Sadowsky or Spector.

Roscoe would be it for me though.

Must ask... does it have to be spent on a bass?

The only other possibility would be towards another car.

Used Cirrus 5 would be a great option for around $1000.

A custom Valenti would my "new build" choice. I have a 5er coming next month and with tons of options it was just over $2k. I wanted something different and Nino and Pat Wilkins will deliver!

That Valenti is quite promising. Considering that I absolutely love my Cirrus four, a Cirrus five would be wonderful. So would something like a Vanquish 5 or wide spaced Carvin Icon 5. More than anything, I want a quality five string. I have sold lots of great basses that I would love to have again, a 55-02 or Stingray 5 would be very high on that list. Another possibility would be a Streamer Broadneck, if I can find one for $1,500 or so.

Put money down on something. I put a deposit down and had the guys at Roscoe start a fretless build for me.

Hard to beat a used 55-02. One of the best import basses I have ever owned. The Deluxe ones are creeping up in price lately though it seems, but you can still find good ones for around $1k.
