100/50watt tube amps?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Son of Bovril, Nov 17, 2005.

  1. Why do we not see mant 100/50watt tube amps on the market nowadays?

theoretically that would be in about the volume ballpark of your average 300/400watt SS head right?

This is a pretty big market segment, yet there aren't many companies offering tube heads in this range? why is that?

I'm sure there are lots of players who play medium volume gigs who would dig a lightweight tube head...

I suppose because a lot of the more modern sounds are going towards more hi fi and crisp sounding.

If the tube amp was only 50-100 watts it would probably start overdriving once the player got into bigger venues.

Then again, I can use my V8 on 200watts and never really go above 3 or 4 on the master (though I ride the gain a bit for that gritty edge).
  3. yeah, true, but i think there are also quite a few people that like that gritty overdrive, but have to push their SVT (for example) head too loud for the venue before they get the grit they are looking for...
