For the last 10 years I played Zon fretless and fretted 5 strings, both with 17mm string spacing. A few months ago I switched to a Sadowsky to work on my slap playing. Well, 19mm spacing certainly does make that easier and I love the sound of the Sadowsky. But after going back to my remaining Zon fretless last night, I realized that I'm *way* happier (as are my hands) with narrower string spacing.

I know that Zon is 17mm and EB is 17.5 (at least for Sterling and StingRay). Any other notable nice basses? Another option is that I'll just go back to 4 string for fretted and get a J-style something or other. The reality is that I'm not a slap player, and instead like a very fast fingerboard to be able to work.

  2. Ibanez ATK305 - 17mm. Love it.

Ibanez SR's (and the Gary Willis fretless). My GWB1 is as lovely and playable an instrument as ever there was.

Tobias - though my preference is for the older MBM (Made By Mike) basses.

    Music Man 5's

Older Pedulla Pentabuzz (they switched to wider spacing a few years ago).

How about splitting the difference and going for 18mm spacing like on a Roscoe..

Wow didn't realize Sadowsky was on TB.

Schecters have 17mm string space. Check out their model T, Diamond P, and Diamond J.

I am a slap player, for sure, and I like the 16.5mm spacing on my Warwick.

Yeah, I had the same problem. Contacted Sadowsky and they wouldn't go under 18mm. I had Tim at Callowhill make me a custom bass which is still being built. 16.5mm spacing.

My Warwick Flamin' Blonde Thumb Bolt on has 16.5mm spacing. I think it's actually help tighten up my slap style when I switch back to 4-string.

I'm curious, can the bridge on, say, a Modulus Quantum simply be swapped out to provide a wider string spacing or would the fretboard size not accomodate that?
