1860 German Flatback for sale

    3/4 German flat back circa 1860. Extremely rich and versatile bass good for jazz as well as orchestral playing.

    42" string length. Unknown maker, excellent condition. The instrument has a top of 2 pieces of medium grain spruce with gamba corners. The flat back is made of 2 pieces of slightly flamed maple. The ribs match the back and there are outside liners present. There is a single inlaid purfling in both tables. The original neck is made rom sycamore and has an ebony fingerboard and original tuning gears made from iron with dyed white wood pegs. The red-brown spirit varnish is a refinish and is in excellent condition with no touch up.

    The Instrument was completely restored in 1995 by Bill Merchant in New York, and is on display in his shop at 208 West 29th Street suite 213. (212) 465 2040 or (845) 687-8981. Asking $15,000 negotiable.
