1953 Kay S8

    Can someone give me a rough idea of what a 1953 Kay S8 would be worth. I'm going to look at one. Looks in great shape. Thanks.

    It all depends on what work it needs and your local market conditions. Last year I sold a similar-vintage S-9 in nice shape, new bridge and setup, and no other work needed for $2800 in northern California, kind of a mid-range market for vintage plys.

    The value of a Kay bass depends mainly on condition, playability and location. The S-8 ('38-54) was at the top of the postwar line beside the S-9, but only about a third as many sold, making it an unusual model. But there's essentially no connoisseur collector's market for Kay, so it's all about how well the bass can help you make music. In good shape it might bring 25-30% more than a comparable C-1.
