Hi, I'm a new member here! I just bought a Gibson EB-2 for $1425 (no case) that was listed as a 1983, which due to my limited knowledge is impossible since they weren't in production then. This bass is a sunburst, with a replacement bridge which I believe to be a Schaller 460. it bears a 6 digit serial number (856XXX), no "Made in USA" on the headstock, and an orange oval sticker inside with "Union Made" on it. I believe it therefore to be a 1966 or 1969. The pushbutton switch has been changed to a toggle style, and there was no break to the neck. Everything is functional, but the bridge will need to be changed back because it is as low as it can be set and the string height on the higher frets is way too high. The only other thing is that the tuning pegs on the lower strings turn in the opposite direction to tune than the ones on the upper strings. I would appreciate if any of you experienced people can comment on value/price, my dating assumptions, or any other useful info or questions. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply and all that info! BTW, the "i" is dotted...my photo chopped off that area of headstock!

The bridge would normally be a giveaway, but the one on that bass is a non-original unit.

Given the "witches hats" knobs, I'd call it a '69 since these were first introduced in '67. An excellent catch by all means, regardless of the actual production year.

I have a '67 (best estimate) sunburst EB-2 in similar condition. I'll check the # for comparison and get back to you tomorrow.

  20. FYI--I love the tone of these and I used an EB-2 for most of the songs on my band's latest record. If you're interested you can click the link in my sig below and have a listen.
