1969 jazz bass that someone sanded the finish off of, i thought it was a natural initially but am told it wasn't offered that year. I picked this up maybe a year ago, had it gone over by one of the top luthier's in Boston. Here is what I was told: He installed a new nut as the original was cracked The neck is straight and true dated June 1969 (happy bday dude), is a fast player and has blocks/binding Pickup screws were replaced w/ new screws One pickup is 1969, the other I've been told 1966 Original pickguard Original case Has rear pickup cover but not front Weighs 9lbs 3oz Essentially all original but nut and pickup screws...he wasn't sure if one of the pickups was a replacement or if they used older stock in original build.
I know in the 70s, they generally stamped under the pickups if it was a natural finish. Not sure before that.
Back in the 70's/80's I had a 68 Jazz with a serial 252558 and it was all original natural/wood finish. ... Dated on the (June?) 68. ... Good chance this was originally a wood finish. ... Have you tried dating the pots if they are original?
I will get a pic of the pots tomorrow....I had the neck stamp pic and now can't find it so I will take another
