1972 pBass

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by stedtale, Apr 23, 2012.

  1. So, I've had a 72 pBass for 10-15 years and just now have decided to get it into good shape. I always knew it needed at least one new pot, so I decided to dig deeper into it. Also, I know that before I had it someone did a craptastic refin job on it. Bad paint, new PG, neck refinish (including sanding off the logo) etc. so, I finally decided to take it all apart and see what it needed to get back and working nice.

    So, let us begin.

    All put together:

Remove the PG. holy bad paint job batman!

hmmmm I'll need to find a new PG that can allow me to access this.

Thanks for painting in the pocket

    Original bridge

    Did they paint the pickups?

    Original pickups ... I think
    [IMG]

nice paint job on the back, comes of while rubbing my finger on it, not even much nail. Wood looks nice. This is the back.

Thanks for sanding off the logo when you did the refinishing job ....still pretty sure its the original neck.

Hmmm.... might needs some fret work too, eh?

Had to get the old xNut out, yikes, how'd you do that?

    Original tuners
    [IMG]

need a little work on one
    [IMG]

    One original knob
    [IMG]

    One original pot:

    Original Cap?????

And this new pot that is dirty and what is this white stuff????

My plan: First get it into working order, new pot, rewire, new xNut, adjustment, tuner, etc.

THEN, I'll get started on a new paint job (black, but it depends on what it looks like underneath). A Vintage Pearl PG, tugbar, bridge cover, pickup cover (The holes from the original tug bar and covers are still there, they are just painted over).

A couple of questions: (and answers)

    1) will that paint on the poles effect the pickups? I assume no, but.... nope, it's corrosion

    2) What's that white stuff on the new pot? Use old pot, ditch the new one. Get a new ... new pot.

    3) Do I need a refret? Or just a dressing? I'll have to have someone take a look, but they look good until the 12th fret.

    4) I have some BL QPs should I put those in or leave the stock pickups? I kinda want to leave the stock ones. Leave the stock ones

    5) Black w/pearl PG and chrome covers, yes? Or perhaps CAR (gold metallic base) with pearl PG and chrome.

    6) where can I get the flat top style knobs? Looks like I can find them online as barrel knobs.

    7) If I keep the old pot, will it make any tone difference if it's used as tone of vol control? Right now it's tone. No difference.

    8) How can I get a new fender waterslide?

    Thanks!!

  2. Ok, I got 'em all loaded.

Pickups are original, and dated 34th week of 72. Yes use those instead of the quarter pounders.
The blackened poles isn't paint. The magnets naturally tarnish and turn black like that.
The pickup screws aren't original tho.

A couple frets look like they're trying to pop out too.

  6. I figured as much with the pickups. Good, I'll replace the screws as those are pretty much stripped.

So, yes, I think it will need more fret work. Anyone do a good job here on TB?

what about the pot? Should I just get two new ones?

Looks like maybe your bass was originally a Candy Apple Red Precision...that silver and red in the neck joint points to that at some point in time.

  8. so, it looked like this perhaps.....

I would leave the original pot, replace the other since it's a replacement. If you're needing an original, they pop up on ebay fairly regularly.

For fret jobs, look up TB'er JohnK_10. Great Fender restorer.

Yep. You got it. CAR is made by spraying coats of silver and red (sometimes in multiple layers, sometimes just a single silver with transparent red on top). Its also not unheard of to shoot gold then red...but definitely looks like what you have there to me. The white pickguard would have come stock on any 'custom color' bass, so that works too.

  11. This has me thinking. I was at first planning on black. But I like the idea of CAR. What other color were available in 72? Is there a website that shows what options were available via the custom shop in 72?

  12. Hey, using Google works....

  13. If I get one new pot and keep the old one. Would it make any difference to use it for vol or tone?

No, as long as the values are the same and both are logarithmic (and don't scratch)... Great project! Stay away from the competition stripes though...

  15. c'mon those are awesome! But, mainly a mustang thing, right? No, I'm really thinking candy apple red.

Any way I can get the fender logo back on the headstock?

Big +1 on JohnK_10 - he's da man, as far as I'm concerned. Here's what he did for my circa 1980 P-bass, before and after. FYI, that finish in the before shot is smoke damaged Lake Placid Blue, which is what he restored it to (minus the smoke, of course ).

Good luck with the project! I almost attempted the same thing on a 70's Jazz bass I found for cheap on CL last summer. It was also badly refin'd but strangely had a late 70's P neck attached instead of the J. My plan was to restore it and add a new J neck, but my luthier said I'd end up sinking a ton of money into it due to its condition. Turns out I didn't get it cheap enough - I ended up only breaking even after I parted it out. Was a great learning experience, though.

  20. So, what color PG? I like the CAR with chrome, but ... antique pearl PG?

like this, well this isn't a pbass, but you get the idea.....
