I know I'm going to regret this, but I'm selling my 1985-1986 Made in Japan Jazz Bass Special. These aren't easy to find especially ones in good condition. This one is a C series serial number which dates it to around 1985-1986. It is Pearl White but has started to turn that classic yellowish color that happens to all of these basses. The neck is straight and it plays beautifully. No nicks, dents, or scratches on the body. This one has the neck painted black on the backside.

I upgraded the pickups to SD SPB-2 Split-Coil neck pickups and SD STK-J2 Hot Stack Jazz pickups at the bridge. I will include the original large pole pickups.

I also installed a new stock bridge but I will include the original bridge.

I added a Hipshot Bass Xtender D Tuner, but will include the original tuner also.

Finally, this includes a Fender hardshell case.

I am asking $600 shipped to the CONUS. Paypal only and sorry no trades.

  2. I’m a big fan of these basses and have 3 in my arsenal. To knowledge the 85-86 (painted neck) are E series and the first digit is either a 5 or 6 (for 1985 or 86). This looks to be an early Duff Mckagan reissue. This bass has a huge following, so I’m curious what others think. If I’m wrong, then please take my money!

Duff re-issues are made in Mexico, not Japan. Fender Japan C series serial numbers are circa 1985-1986. The E series are 1984-1987.
Here’s a shot of the neck and body with the neck removed.

I'm also fairly certain the Duff reissue has a bridge pickup slightly closer to the neck than the original. This specimen seems to have the pickup in the period correct position.
