This is the best P bass I've ever owned but the bottom line is I hardly ever play a P-Bass. So here it is.........again! I have actually bought and sold this bass 3 times over the last 10 years

This bass feels VERY vintage to me, particularly the neck. It has very nice rolled edges on the board. I love the color which is actually Surf Green. In the photos it appears a bit darker and kind of looks like Seafoam Green but trust me, it's the lighter shade Surf Green color.

I changed out the pickup and it now sports a Duncan SPB1. I have the original that will be included with the bass.

The pots and jack have been changed out and replaced with high quality switchcraft components. The knobs are replacements as is the tortoise guard and covers. When I originally bought the bass from a Nashville player it had no covers and a white guard. I think it looks a lot better now.

It will also come with a "real" vintage Fender P-Bass hard shell case. The black tolex kind with the red/orange plush interior. It looks to me like it may be from the late 60's or early 70's but I can't say for certain.

Weight is 9 pounds 6.6 ounces. The nut measures 1 11/16".

[DEL]$1,195.00 [/DEL]> Now Reduced to $1,095.00 Shipped and insured in the CONUS.

this might not be the best place for this question, and it's not directed at the seller but anyone who knows the history, but what was the supposed reason for the pickup and bridge covers? to keep cigarette ashes out of them? :) they just don't seem to make any sense to me. they look great and I'm tempted by this bass, but I'd take them off in a heartbeat - I want easy access to string changing. well on most p's you put a set of flats on it and leave it alone for years and just play the **** out of it. This is my opinion tho. the covers look super cool to me.

IMO the covers are largely historical. They really don't serve any practical purpose as far as I can tell. I understand why many players remove them as they can get in your way depending on your playing style and technique. I am a fingerstyle player and I have found that I'm comfortable resting my right thumb on the edge of the pickup cover and then playing just behind it with my other fingers (see the last photo of me playing the bass). If someone buys this beautiful bass they can certainly remove the covers if that's their preference......

  6. I've got a 62' RI just like this one in 3TSB, same year.
The neck is quite big but I really love it. Awesome vintage feel, incredible bass for the dough. Bought mine to be a backup to my Gibson Ripper, now my Ripper is my backup.
    GLWTS.

Thanks for the bump and the positive comments. I know a lot of this is subjective but I have never thought of the neck on this bass as being "Big". Actually it feels a little thinner to me than many of the 70's P basses I have played over the years. I find it to be quite comfortable but I do have reasonably large hands so that may be why. Regardless the neck feel is "very vintage" and I always enjoy playing it!

In response to "why do Fender Basses (older ones) have the covers over the pickups?"....I have heard from many sources that Leo Fender belived that the pickup covers helped shield the pickups from noise and focus the magnetic pull. Newer pickups have more advanced designs and this isn't an issue. It probably wasn't a major issue "back then" either, but players bought into the theory that it helped the signal or kept out stray noise.

Thanks for your input road-cat1 ! Yep, I've heard that theory too but never knew if it was really true or not. Sounds kind of like the 50's SciFi mindset meets bass guitar building......gotta love that!

Thanks for that. That seems obvious and makes sense given the times and infancy of electricity. I don't think a three prong outlet existed in the 50/60s?
And sure, increase my temptation with a lower price... :)

Forgive a noob type question, but 34" scale? My first bass was a 1989 Fender CIJ and was 32" scale.

    Beauty of a P . . .

Man if this were fiesta red I'd be in trouble.

  16. Beautiful grain on that neck. 89 was a great year for Fender MIJ.

  17. So the covers are like tin-foil hats?

the covers had foam strips in them to dampen the strings.. to get a tone closer to an upright when using flats..

    it's a nice bass..

My dad had a '64 Chevy Bel Aire in that color. All that chrome looks right on!

Would this be a '62 reissue? Those necks were a flatter profile as I recall and the older vintage like the '57 was chunkier. I think:meh:
