I just got an ampeg B-5r..which is stable down to 2 ohms and am getting a avatar 4x10 cab..I was wondering is it safe to add an 8 ohm cab to this so I would be running the amp at 2.8 ohms so ithe amp would run cooler than if I were running 2 four ohm cabs? Does mixing impedence loads damage an amp?
  2. Will it run cooler at 2.8ohms than 2ohms? Yes.
Will it run significantly cooler? No...and the 8ohm cab will get only half as much power as the 4ohm cab.

...and your amp should be just fine. As a side note, I've actually seen some amps rated at 2.67 ohms (which is what a 4 ohm and an 8 ohm cab will give you).
