i have 2 inputs on my hartke amp, one labeled "passive" and one "active"

I have also seen on a few bass maker sites "active" and "passive" basses.

What is the difference between active and passivE?

passive basses have no onboard preamp
an active bass has an onboard preamp and a battery (or 2)
active basses put out a "hotter" signal than passive ones so a lot of bass amp manufacturers include an "active" input which doesnt boost the signal as much (that's an oversimplification, but you get the point)
in most cases you can use an active bass in the passive input unless the bass in question puts out a signal so strong that at causes the preamp section of your amplifier to distort
