I've seen original Sting Rays (Pre-Ernie Ball) in excellent condition for about $3000 USD. New Erimie Ball Rays sell new for about $1100-1300. If the new $hitty Ray you're refering to is the OLP Ray (Official Licenced Product), I haven't played one yet but it's safe to say it's nowhere near as good as the real deal. But for $250.00 it's probably better than other basses in it's range (if you're looking for a Ray vibe.

To get to the point, Sterlings have a smaller body, thinner neck, different pickup w/a 3 way selector switch to get different tones.
