I just bought/received a 2000 MIM Fender Precision from a fellow tb'er and received it today. I did some intial setup and plugged her in. The pickups must be super hot on this thing because I have my BXR 60 on less than 1, and if I put the volume up to anything beyond 1/2 on the bass the amp sounds like I have it on 5/10! Its WAY loud - same on my rig (carvin r600 w/ peavey 4X10). Is it normal for the volume to be so loud on these?? I used to have a 2003 MIM fender P-bass and I don't recall having it be this loud.
You could always back the pickups down away from the strings. I'd say you are lucky though - I *love* a hot P pickup. I tried to buy one recently advertised as over wound and super hot, and was unimpressed when I installed it. (it was about 20% hotter than the pickup it replaced, and that pickup was weak in comparison to "normal" P pickups) Is the bass active? Are you clipping the input stage of your amp?
pickups aren't even that close to the strings...I don't know - seems "wrong" but its just more "umph" so I guess it can't be that bad. Need some flats for it but overall it is good to be back in the p-bass club. It is a 9 year old bass, so maybe some work has been done to it along the way. I'm going to adjust the pickups so they look like when they come new - the centers closer to the strings than the ends. Maybe that will bring things back to a normal level.
