Got to play each of these side by side at a local shop.

The Fenders sure have improved... I love the neck with the rolled edges, also liked the look (white w/ maple neck). Setup sucked, but what else is new. Not so crazy about the super thick poly on the fingerboard, but that's just a cosmetic thing. It was very light and resonant.

The Lakland was equally nice. I'm not so crazy about the blocks and binding... just seems out of place on a P. The pots and knobs were noticeably higher quality than the Fender. Very smooth and precise. I usually don't dig jazz width necks but this one felt great and the low action and tiny frets gave it a slick, greasy feel that I really got into.

As for tone, no contest. The Lakland wiped the Fender clean, IMO. The Fender seemed to have a bigger low end and more punch at first, but I soon realized that was because the mids were so weak. The Lakland was perfectly consistent on all strings as well as up and down the neck. Mids were very present and rich. Sounded beautiful.

Overall, I like the look and feel of the new Fenders. I wonder if a setup, new strings and Lakland pickup would get it close to the Lakland tone-wise. If not, I can't really see buying one of these '08 Precisions. Just not the tone I look for in a P.

I would love a Duck Dunn in CAR.

Pity about them being so expensive over here...

    Bino,
Was that a US Made Dunn or a Skyline?
    Thanks!

I would bet it's a Skyline. I've seen two, maybe three US Dunns anywhere (online, at the Lakland shop, etc.) so far. I'm very impressed with the new Fenders, too, but I really dig that new Lakland P pickup more and more.

Going through that much work on the Fender sounds like too much for me.....check out a Bob Glaub (dots, P-neck etc)......shouls sound the same as the DD you played.....

I actually owned an 08 P5 briefly that I bought from Matt here on TB. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality, beauty and impressive thump I could get from that bass. In the end, though, I ended up keeping my Glaub and getting a 55-01 to replace the P5 due to neck feel and the better resonance on the low B string from the 55-01.

But that 08 Fender P5 is one hell of a bass.

Ive got to second the original post.

Both are great but the Lakland has the bigger bang for the buck.

Yes, the Dunn was a skyline. I'm not as into the wide Glaub neck, otherwise I would be all over it.

Overall, I prefer the neck on the Fender '08. But the tone of the Lakland was it! If they made the Glaub with the 44-02 neck I would be set.

Sounds like the Fender with a Fralin p/u swap is what you want.

Isn't that what the Dunn comes with, or am I mistaken?

Lakland started making their own pickups. The new Lakland P pickup sounds amazing.

That's pretty cool that they're doing there own now.

Sounds amazing in what way? Vintage tone, modern tone, hot, cool, what are they like? I would anticipate that a Dunn sig would be very vintagey.

You can actually buy those Lakland pickups. There are definitely more early 60's vintage in tone.... much more midrange emphasis. I owned an '83 V00... Fender Reissue Pbass and the Lakland sounds very close, but with more clarity than I recall the Fender having.

Well I have always had a hard time describing bass tone. There are sound samples on the Lakland site. The Duck Dunn bass samples have the new pickups and the Glaub sound samples are old and still have the old pickups. You could compare them there to hear for yourself which will be more acurate then my description :) BUT...

I would say that "vintage" isn't really the word I would use. Yes it has a vintage vibe but it also seems to be higher output than the standard vintage pickup. I LOVED the Fralins and when Lakland switched over I was ready to be displeased. I even asked them to drop a Fralin in my last Glaub before I had heard the new pickups. They refused which worked out in my favor. The notes just seem more distinct than with the Fralin and it sits in the mix way better than my Fralin Glaubs did (and they were already good in all honesty). I would say they are a modern sounding vintage pickup...learning more toward the vintage side.

More clarity is definitely what I hear.

I remember seeing those pickups listed as $200 or something ridiculous though wasn't it? I remember thinking that i liked them but not enough to pay that aftermarket price.

Agreed all the way, I'm pretty sure my next P will have one. Savit, I linked above to soundclips of a Dunn with Lakland's own P pup.

Ive got both a 2008 P5 and a Skyline DD and i also agree with the OP.
I do love the block inlays on the DD though.
Ive not played Lakland pups but i really do love the Fralin i n mine and to my ears its the best sounding bass ive ever played.
I feel the Fralin is clearer, with more sparkle but with a lot of punch. It seems to have more highs than the Fender.
The Fender just sounds like a good Fender to me and does the job very well.
I just "needed" that extra string so got the P5. Still not 100% happy with the set up on the P5 but i do like the tone and the neck feels more comfortable than my old 55-01.
