That sounds so damn good. His tone was never better than when he played a J -- front pu, rotosound strings. Lake is a tremendous musician and a very underrated bassist.

  3. Sounds like both pickups to me, it has that hollow twang.
I believe there is a second bass overdubbed on the actual track, playing the main riff with a heavy fuzz effect - sounds like a Big Muff.

Fantastic clip, perhaps now I'll finally get round to learning this properly! :bassist:

  4. Just listened to the guitar track - the fuzz bass track is on here.

I vote J with both PUPS, Swing Bass 66 Rotos and, of course, played with pick. Saw ELP on their first American tour in 1971 and Greg's live sound was much the same as this, thru two Hiwatt heads and four 415 cabs.

"In The Courtyard" is one of the best albums i have ever listened to.
This bass track is awsome. There's also a mix of this song as a trio (one bass, one guitar and drums) that totally kicks @$$

Not to be a stickler but the album is called "In The Court of The Crimson King". (and that's the shortened version of the title!) :bassist:

Yeah, mispelled the "court" to "courtyard", but you get the idea. And i am too lazy to write the whole title.

Im suprised its so bright and clanky, I always thought it was fuzzier and deeper! Its cool how different a bass in a mix can sound.

Here's a bass and drum track version, since the OP's doesn't seem to work:

I agree, Im a Pbass guy but I love that distinct sound of a J with both pups maxed.
