25 Frets...

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Nick Bibeault, Jun 15, 2004.

  1. I was just thinking about all the extended range basses there are out there and how many of them have 24,26,36 frets etc...and i was wondering if my FBB custom is the only bass out there that was built to have 25 frets. I didn't order the bass as i bought it used but i cant seem to think of any reason why i have 25 frets on this thing. Anyone else have some unusual fret amounts on their fingerboards?

Hey man, you got a *Kona* bycicle? You wouldn't believe what that means in Portuguese.. :D

  3. Some of the old Tune basses had 25 frets, I believe. I had a Wal that had the fretboard replaced, and there was room for an additional fret on the end so it ended up with 25 frets.

If you're curious about your FBB and why it has 25 frets, the simplest way to get your answer is to contact the builder, Matt Schmill, aka "FBB Custom", who's a member a frequent poster here.

Erm, I'm just wondering if this is a bass with a 2 octave neck and a zero fret?

I could be way off here, but it sounds like that could explain 25 frets! :)

Btw, how does the fact of having extra frets affects the slap ability of a bass? I'm sure I read somewhere that It made a difference of some sorth.

  11. WHY? I still don't get 9 string basses - they just don't do it for me - 6 is more than enough.

  12. i would think that fanned frets would be impossible to chord and just all around play!

  14. There is less space between the pickup and the end of the fingerboard to get your fingers behind the string.

  15. I actually live about a half mile from the builder Matt when i am at school, and i do have contact with him but i have never gotten around to asking him what this was about. I know the bass was a project he did and has his only "wave" style top that he has ever produced. I am very familiar with his works.

If you want to see it, you can look for it #43-01 on the FBB site.

Oh, and it doesn't have a zero fret.

I think I'm going crazy. When I look at that, the strings keep moving up and down very slowly.

I believe the owner of that bass is graphic designer, though.
