For $300 or so what do you figure the best deal is on a head for occasional gigging in small to medium bar/party sized venues? This is what I have gleaned from recent posts:

    Ashdown Mag 300 (new)
    GK 600 (new)
    GK 800RB (used)
Possibly GK700+ or recent GK 400RB-III+ (used)

    Any others? Opinions on these?

Go used for sure. If you had $500 - $600, Id say go new (Kustom Groove Bass 1200 or GK 1001 RBII). Lot's of good solid used options for $300 - $400 (Trace, GK, SWR, Peavey, etc etc...)

Peavey Max 160. ~$300 new. Sounds great. All the features you need. Much louder than the wattage number would lead you to believe. Made in USA.

What kind of music are you going to play?

I'd go used. Like said before their are lots of solid used options for around $300.

I personally love the 800RB, think the 400rb is not powerful enough to play with a rock drummer, and I seem to see that there are bad comments about the backline series, but i've never tried it. Personally, I don't like the ashdown tone much, but it's just my opinion. I like GK and SWR. The 800RB is quite versatile, and loud enough for medium venues.

It does fine with a rock drummer. Played with a 1x15, a 2x10, and then both of them together. That GK is plenty for most rock bands (the one I was in was pretty loud, too).

You could get a Peavey Firebass used for about 300
