Does anyone know if otherwise hard- or impossible-to-find pickup covers could be fashioned in a 3D printer for reasonable cost? I want to make a double-J humbucker pickup cover in cream for my 2009 Fender American Deluxe Precision Bass.

I'm making 3d-printed covers for my Ibanez RB850 Wal-style multicoil pickups.

Cool! Now I just have to find somebody with a 3-D printer. Any particular specs/capabilities on the printer I should look out for?

I have Markforged industrial series machines. I’d be willing to give it a go. Pm me

I made Bryan Tyler a set of radiused custom pickup covers and ramp; I would also be willing to give it a go. I print in PLA because ABS is awful; I have a few different machines and I'm only about 20 miles away =0)

You could paint the cover any color you like.

Revival - anyone have any 3d printed cover updates? I'm thinking of printing a cover / ramp for Nordstrands DC pickup for an upcoming Cliff Bordwell build. I've got an Elegoo Mars resin printer. Gonna do a white cover to go with white speed knobs for a slightly vintage look.

Anybody know the max / min cover thickness above the coils to shoot for?

I've had some pretty good luck with SLS, for both covers and bobbins:

Not perfect, but these are at the higher end of layer thickness for nylon 12... higher resolution is available, but I havent yet tried that. (I don't have an SLS printer, and honestly it's still a bit pricey at low quantities to farm this work out, but works great for prototyping)

I've been shooting for 0.1", and that's been working out pretty well. At least with SLS nylon.

That looks great! I'm hoping my resin print works out OK with concealed poles.

Very nice, it lacks the ugliness of so many 3d prints.

I have some covers in the works which I'll likely print in PETG as it is much stronger than PLA especially in regards to layer adhesion.

I have printed a bunch of knobs in TPU. I like the softer squishy feel and they work very well. But they still have that ugliness I mentioned.

I'd love to see how that comes out. I haven't used this kind of resin bath printer but the output looks so much smoother and more refined.
As thin as possible before it breaks :) 1mm or less should be doable.

I'm gonna try and keep it thin... Probably gonna upsize it to around 4.75" x 3" so it functions as a ramp as well.

  15. Ha, I was just looking at some 3D printers yesterday and thinking about pickup builds. With the hobbyist printers I saw at Jaycar (Aussie Radio Shack type store), covers would need some finishing/polishing. But plastic is pretty easy to sand and polish...

I just realized I asked you the same questions just now on that other thread .. what pickups are those 3 pole ones though? Custom?

Yeah, those are some custom ones I'm playing around with.

As for the printer I'm using, I'm actually having them done by an online company, Xometry. An SLS printer is too rich for my blood.

That...is brutal. I'd recommend the Elegoo Mars. 250.
