i have been looking for a new octave to try out and I hear 3leaf mk2 is the one to go with. One thing that peaked my interest was the tones on one side being boss oc2 like and the other being a mutron but i wanted opinions from people who already have this pedal. I also notice they have a mini version. Does the mini also have the same sounds as the full size? It seems to be on the higher end as far as cost and I want to make sure I'm not just going to be disappointed. Thanks in advance!
When the Octabvre came out it was close to the OC-2 sound but not as deep sounding. When rolling the tone to the right it got much grittier/"angry robot" sounding. This is described as the Mu-Tron side but I think it's just a less filtered squarewave (most octavers create a squarewave and use a flip-flop circuit to make the down octave which then has to be smoothed out with a filter) . Anyway, many users (Tim Lefebvre included it seems) wanted a deeper octave sound closer to the OC-2. So the Octabvre came out in a "Tim Tuning" version. The tone knob has less effect now but on the left it's now really close to the OC-2 sound. I say all that because the mini Octabvre is permanently in the "Tim Tuning" whereas the big version (Mk II anyway) can switch between the two settings. Personally I use both of them about equally. Original tuning to push dirt or filters (or for a grittier tone) and original for big, deep octave sounds. The Big version also has a stomp switch to solo the octave down. I also use this a ton. But if you wouldn't solo the octave down or what the original tuning then the Mini is a better buy. Personally I think the Mini is a bit of an upgrade from the OC-2 as the octave down has a bit of range to the different tones and because it has more gain on tap, something I struggled with using the OC-2. But for me it was the two tunings and octave down solo switch that were the deciding factors so I'm not nearly as interested in the Mini. YMMV.
Mini works great for me. Sounds very similar to the OC2 but with more volume on tap... Happy to have a smaller pedal rather than the full size one as I prefer the Tim tuning and only use it in soloed octave mode as a synth effect.
Yeah, the mini gets it done for me. And if i want to blend clean in, the mix knob is on the right side and I'm able to do it with my feet.
Looks like they are about $20 in price difference in guessing if I don't care about space the larger one would be the one to go with ?
I have an earlier full sized Octabvre before the "Tim Tuning" was an option. Haven't felt the need to send it away to have Spencer do the mod. Personally, I love the second footswitch, I often use it with a Pork Loin like Tim to get very synthy sounds. It's an absolute keeper for me, it's so versatile, I haven't used my OC-2 or MXR BOD in months. If the OP wants an analog octaver, you won't be disappointed. AFAIK, the mini is the same sound as the regular, just smaller and no second footswitch or extra knob.
I need to get mine out and play it. Bought mine about a year ago right before I went into a wireless / tuner / OD and DI phase.
I had the original big version. I wanted the Tim Tuning and I never used the Sub switch...so I sold it and bought the Mini version. It's exactly what I wanted! A and newer and better version of the OC-2.
Got this and i have to say it sounds great. There are a few things i need to get accustomed to such as the "glitches" you get im hoping this is normal...but when you get it dialed in it sounds great
