Basically I want the best of both worlds (inmy opinion) I want the tone of the Bartolini 5.4 NTMB, and i want the sweep midrange control of an Aguilar OBP-3. Right now I have a 3 way switch with stock capacitors giving me control of these frequencies, are 250Hz, 500Hz and 800Hz. There is a way to swap out the capacitors to other frequencies, but that still leaves me with 3 choices, and the stock ones are pretty good. Here is a link to how to cut the pcb and add your own cap's http://www.bartolini.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/NTMB -Mid-Switch-Configuration-min.pdf Now, The Aggie OBP-3 is a GREAT preamp, no denying, but to my ears at least with the pickups i'm using, which are sun bleached bone scrubbed with snow clean, it is cold. That's what they want tho, exact reproduction of the sound of YOUR bass. Aguilar gives you much more control over the midrange, allowing you to sweep frequencies you want to boost/cut in this range Mid +/- 17 dB @ 180 Hz to 1 kHz. I want to remove my switch and add a knob so my frequncies can be swept as well, and I dont want to do it by jamming 15 capacitors on a rotary dial. One more thing. 180 HZ-1KZ is a huge portion of the tones I both love and hate on a bass. Sometimes i cut, sometimes I boost, what I would like to see (Hint Aggie Staff OBP-4??) is TWO mid range knobs with variable frequencies! THen you can cut the harsh/honk/wonk and boost the Pop/Whap/Thump at the same time. I have seen 2 sweepable mid controls that overlap like this http://www.ikmultimedia.com/mobile/products/treqpb/ Why not have both adjustable midranges span the whole spectrum of mid? 1. How Will I accomplish changing my 3 way to a sweep? 2. Is there a way to cut / boost two mid frequencies at the same time by adding an additional mid module from an older 2 piece NTMB? Or would I have to have 2 onboard preamps...that would be silly to me. { Full disclosure, also, I like the name Bartolini,.it sounds all interesting, like a european sidewalk cafe with a rusty bicycle leaning on one of the tables, and there is a benji looking dog sleeping under the other one, they give you free fresh baked baguettes,it's a little bit warm for a spring day and the sun is shining on your back, the waitress is crazy hot, but kind of mean because she doesn't really understand english well and there are radishes and butter at the table.... Aguilar to me sounds like backstage at a Bon Jovi concert all I can smell is hairspray, whiskey and pee, some guy is yelling and fist pumping the air and he is all sweaty, there is Sharpie graffiti that for some reason are actually complex math equations on the wall also the floor hasn't seen a mop since 1987 and there are dust bunnies. that is a critiqe of the NAME only,i used to be in advertising, trust me both of those companies labored for days to come up with a name that invokes imagery (unless those are someones last names...EDIT after google search Oh..Bill Bartolini ...Well I still bet there isn't a Bill Aguilar, second edit, google#2...Oh.. Alex Aguilar and Bill Bartolini....Huh. ), I love their products, tone hammer is top of my got to have its.} Tone Hammer® Mid +/- 17 dB @ 180 Hz to 1 kHz http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_preamps_tonehammer.htm The pre-set Mid frequencies on the HR-4.7, HR-5.3, and HR-5.4 http://www.bartolini.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/NTMB -Mid-Switch-Configuration-min.pdfcapacitors that will give me
Really? No help? I guess I'll have to wire 10 capacitors to a rotary selector after all. Or get a tone hammer pedal, that would be like having two onboard preamps! . Hopefully I can get a different preamp that I'm in negotiations with the seller right now. It's a model I've always wanted and never could afford. Going to pull an all night glass session tonight to fill in my budget, plus I have several basses I've been refurbished ing finaly ready to sell, they all were missing tunings pegs, came today.
I had a similar type question last year regarding a preamp that had a variable mid frequency control that I wanted to modify as a switch selector (sort of the opposite of what you want to do) Anyways, Dave, President from Aguilar, had this to say regarding the OBP-3 and sweepable mids.>> (link)<< Maybe look more into the design of the Tonehammer since that specifically has a mid sweep control, although the mids frequency is selected by the variable resistance of the pot, as opposed to switchable capacitance of caps on a NTMB switch...might not be possible.
I'm looking into variable capacitor trimmers, I think that is what music man has inside the preamp with the internally adjustable "slap" switch. Really, there are just 2-3 frequency s I would want in addition to what the NTMB has, 430, and 670 , from messing with a big rack eq. I haven't been thinking about this right, sit ting around the house or studio you have all the time in the world to screw with your sound, on stage it's more compromise, you get your tone and go, a switch makes more sense, since half the time you can hardly hear yourself, and no one comes to a show to see you fiddle with your knob. Heh. I found a few ways to do it, some strange, steampunk, science fiction, but I think adding a few extra caps with 3way micro switches will be plenty. Cap ranger I think is my favorite, remind s me of Tom swift! You can make a variable capacitor with 2 tin cans and a piece of cardboard apparently as well, prisoners did it in ww2. They must have had excellent tone control of their basses in there.
The internal search is buggy, I just found this thread searching google ô outside, similar thread, eventually came up with what I found, then something by east standalone mid component fix. L http://www.talkbass.com/threads/bartolini-ntmb-with-sweepable-mids-semiparametric-mids.686751/
Well, it isn't the cheap way I was hoping fir, not going to do it, it costs 67euros, so I'd rather have a tone hammer , but John East has a mid boost cut module, http://www.east-uk.com/index.php/bass/mid-sweep-01.html Still looking into modern variable capacitor s, but if anything I'll just make the wheel of 12 caps,. I've seen it in a strat or something.
Search the 'bay for variable capacitors- I picked up some really small ones (that will need the right fixed cap attached) that were old electronics takeouts. Less than $3 each. They look like the 2nd variable cap you show- like really small radio tuners (old style). Haven't hooked them up yet, tho.
So I need a variable capacitor from.47uf to .068uf , would anyone know where to buy one? Mouser has them but I don't understand the value s. how do the trim pots in mm basses work?
