This year marks our 40th year together, and although I'm going to have to play the Faux P in my honkabilly band, I just can't quit playing my '69 J.

I have a wonderful '78 to sub for it, but I inevitably end up with the '69 around my neck by gig's end.

Now, I know this sounds silly, but I've started talking to it like an old friend.

When I throw the strap over and sink the cable, I'm beginning to have little mental conversations with it kinda like taking an old dog out hunting again.

Ok, I'm starting to lose it.

  2. very nice ...did it start life natural?

You and that bass, dear sir, have had a longer relationship than most human beings have. I wouldn't say you're losing it at all. This is a wonderful story and I'm sure that after 40 years, you know that bass like you know your own limbs. :bassist:

    Congrats on 40 years, here's to 40 more. ;)

that is just awesome. If only it could talk back - the things it might say.

    Beautiful bass by the way.

    Thanks, really.

I'm the second owner. Original owner was in a band whose manager made them sell all their gear and buy stuff to be like the Beatles. I traded a $250 practice amp for it sometime around 1970.

It started life as a sunburst, and sometime in the mid '70's I got this stoner idea to strip the finish and make it natural.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. (Kids, do not try this at home, ok? :atoz:)

The Blue Guitar in San Diego refretted it sometime in the late '80's when Uris was still doing that kind of thing.

All the posts, dots, keys, and pups are original, and maybe I've just gotten set in my ways, but I still love the tone of it.

Just last Saturday night I just turned to my amp, leaned over, and let it wash over me.

And, thank goodness it can't talk. I'd probably be doing life without parole.

I played this 1968 Rickenbacker 4001 bass here for 33 years ... then I switched to being a 5 string player and sold it.
