I've tried some Hartke amplifiers with 4x10 cabs. I like them but I don't like it that they're so costly.

I'm not willing to spend more than $1000 on a bass rig, as I'm not too rich and bass isn't my main instrument but I'd like to have a decent gigging rig that gives me more punch and power than my 50W Samick with a 15" speaker.

So I figured 4x10 is what I want, playing heavy metal and jazz. The wattage doesn't matter as long as it's loud and powerful enough for small gigging and studio use.

I'll probably be looking for used amps.

Also check out Gallien-Krueger heads. Great bang for the buck, especially on the used market.

GK 400rb sounds ideal for you at 240W. (at 4 ohms)
