Im in the market for a new 5 string in the 1000-1200 range. The 2 basses I have my eye on are the Stringray 5 and G&L 2500. I know the final decision is up to me, but I just wanted some opinions on the versitility of 1 pu vs. 2. I play a variety of music from jazz and blues to hardcore. Im very open to other suggestions in this range also.

This is a tough one. If you define 'versatile' as the ability to produce a wider variety of sounds from your bass, then G&L wins. But as many have pointed out, versatile can also mean that the bass gives one (or few sounds) that 'fit' many different kinds of music.

In the end, you will have to decide which definition applies to you. In terms of quality, workmanship etc, these are both very fine bass guitars.
