You could get a used Peavey Cirrus for a bit less than that; they pop up every so often. I got a used 6'er for $700, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Peavey Millennium (USA) used or new. Try the new AC-BXP series which is their new import, it is quite impressive as well.

Another option would be Spector. They have some nice 5's in that price range.

I think I'll take a lakland skyline 5502.. $1200... what do you think about that bass?
  9. I'd get that over the others with a cirrus second

Cliff, I have an almost new 55-02 Deluxe that I'm going to sell. PM me if you're interested and I can definitely save you some money. I haven't even listed it anywhere yet, but I'm going to in the next few days. It has the 3-tone Sunburst finish with a quilt top.
