need ideas of basses I should look at
Ibanez SR 505.
Squier VM jazz V, Affinity Jazz V, Dlx Active V...
ibanez has some offerings...
just don't get a rogue
What style you into? Wick Rockbass corvette passive is around 6, so is a standard fender jazz I think too? the wick is very nice, played one a while back and was very impressed. that'd be the first place I'd look under a grand . . . my 2¢
ESP Surveyor might be impossible to beat:

Use the coupon at the top of the page to get it around $600.
Most basses in that range will need replacement pickups, especially Ibanez. This one uses real USA EMG pickups. Quite a step up from most stuff in that price range.
Better yet, get one used. They go for around $450.
Get a used heir 5. You wont beat it for $400
Why are you asking on the MSRP rather than street value? I would have thought of the Washburn Taurus T-25, Luna Paz Lenchantin 5er, the Yamaha BB425, Ibanez SR305, Peavey Millenium 5, Peavey Grind 5, I think there's a 5er Squier VM now, or an SX of course. Street value on all of those is under $600, but the MSRPs are up around $800 on some of them.
For the very reason you stated...if I know the MSRP, the street value will be obviously less!
I got a used SX J style for $125 used, got Fender USA pickups, new bridge, new pots, sounded like a monster! About $200 total.
What I meant was that usually no one pays any attention to MSRP. What's your actual budget? $600? $400? $300?
LOL. why didn't you just say that to begin with?
Check the classifieds, I found these two in under a minute.
I got a nice used G&L L2500 tribute off Ebay for $400.
For a new instrument at $450, if it were me, I'd probably go with either a Peavey Grind or a Schecter Stiletto. Used, of course, there are more options.

This is the best sounding one I've heard for that price (at least to my ears).
Also, Peavey makes some great sounding "more modern" 5's that you can get pretty cheap. Or you can look for a used Foundation 5 or Dyna Bass 5.
