    Here's a general question about 5-string basses.....

I play a MIM Fender Jazz, but for a variety of reasons, I'm looking to upgrade. I've always been partial to Fenders - I own 3 - but I'm looking for something that has similar string spacing to a Fender. I have a Yamaha BB5000, but I don't like the narrow spacing by the pickups, so I never use it at gigs.

So.....here's my question: How would any of you compare the Lakland 55-01, or the G & L Tribute 2500 in terms of the string spacing? Are they comparable? I just read a post where a guy said the G & L spacing was narrower (16mm vs. the 19mm on a Fender)....is this true? I'm in an area where there are no dealers for either brand, and I don't want to buy anything sight unseen.

I'm thinking in the $400-$600 range (used instruments are OK). Any info is appreciated.

IIRC the Fender J 5 strings have narrower spacing as do Music Man and G&L 5's. The Lakland 55-01 & 55-02 have wider spacing as does the Fender P 5.
