That is by no means a five string bass. They threw on an extra machine head on the lower half of the headstock, they routed an extra string Ferrule through the body, and if you look not even carefully at the bridge it only has Four saddles.
At the moment its only a TWO string bass.
This bass gets the Darwin award for fail!

Ouch. That is NOT the way to do that.

Wow, what a mess. The only decent thing in that auction is the case.

Wow. Definitely doesn't look the greatest. But if try to convert it back to a 4'er, doesn't look like theres much work besides getting a new nut (if you don't mind seeing the holes drilled for the ferrule and tuning head).

Oh - what a travesty!! Either they quit the mod when it came to solving the bridge problem, or have re-installed the original bridge to help sell the horrible thing.

It'll also need a new bridge saddle, which isn't the easiest thing to come by.

Might be worth it for cheap enough. And I mean REALLY cheap.

Agreed. Unfortunately, given how much is obviously wrong with this bass, at first glance, I'd be concerned that there is even more stuff wrong with it that we can't see.

Ouch!! Someone really did a half ass job on that guitar. And I know something about doing half assed jobs on guitars. Best way to make this a 5 string is to scrap the original bridge and have someone who knows somewhat what they are doing to install a specific 5 string. Also forget the through body. That conversion is all kinds of fail.

"This has seen a lot of years of play, and it was a treasured piece in his collection."

Based on this comment alone, I wouldn't bid on this auction. If this was in fact a "treasured piece", the previous owner was an irredeemable boob. I imagine Jethro drilled the hole in the headstock and when he tried to string it up, he got to the bridge and said "uh oh..."

    I like 5, 8, 10, and 12 string basses
It looks like a botched 4 to 5 conversion ... I may have to buy it and fix it ...

You of all people can do it!

I emailed Chip Todd about building a 5-string T-40 once, but he wanted to do a conversion of a 4 string for me... I was hoping for a wider neck so I passed.

Just think of the market there would be if someone would build modern variants of the T-40 with lighter bodies, but those same perfectly sized necks and the kickass electronics? Not to mention if you had a wider-spaced 5 string...

Those above modded basses are atrocities. Too bad the guy with the "8 string" is asking too much, that solid red is relatively rare in the T40 world.
