I just got my 55-02 today, and I believe it came with DR Hi-beams, I'm guessing that they're nickel by the feel and tone. I like the tone, but I'm curious about experimenting with other brands.

I used TI flats on my Skyline Glaub and I loved them, so I have a 5 string set coming to try out on the 55-02. Anyone have experience with the B string on TI flats?

If you play a 5 string, what strings do you use?

  2. I also have a Lakland 55-02....

    ...using Foderas, stainless steel atm

...but I use the nickel Foderas too

I use stainless steel DR Hi-Beams.

  4. I love my DR high beams. They're all I ever use now. 130 B. I tried the taper wounds, but now I go for the fully wound B & E.

I like the DR's, but recently I've been turned on to the Nanowebs.

    GHS Boomers, 45, 65, 85, 105, 130.
I like them better than DRs-- more flexible feel, less strident mids (to my ear).

Fender nickel "Super Bass". Love 'em on all my fretted electrics regardless of string count.

Sadowsky Nickels. I also like TI Superalloys quite a bit.

D'Addario nickels, 50-70-85-105-130 taperwound. The fully wound B wouldn't sit right in the bridge slot (Ibanez BTB405, with the monorail bridge).

I tried a lot of different strings. Best strings for me are Ernie Ball Power Slinky Nickel (.050.070.085.105.135)

  18. I use DR Hi-Beams in 40-100 with a 130 B on a 34" scale Modulus. If I were playing a 35" scale I would go lighter. It's kind of tricky to narrow in on one's personal preferance without just trying different sets and figuring out what works best for you.

You're going to get a million different replies all with their favorite strings.

Hi Beams are steel. Maybe you got Sunbeams, the nickel version of Hi Beams.

The 55-02 is a truly cool bass because it doesn't require a specific kind of string in order to get good, usable tone out of it.
