Look at the Ibanez BTB405(much tighter B string than the Soundgear and Ergodyne series) and the MTD Kingston 5.

Both basses have great B strings and great tone, and are under $600.

The BTB405 has 2 humbuckers, and active bass, mid and treble control, and much better electronics than the other Ibanez series.

The Kingston 5 looks kind of like a Stingray, has a similar pickup, and has quiet electronics. It is not quite as versatile as the BTB, but it's a killer bass too.
