My brother just moved out and left a 5 string bass that I would like to pick up, but dont know the first thing about.
Can someone tell me the name of each string??
the top (thickest string) is the string that would not be there on a normal 4 string correct?
thanks for your help in advance

The tuning is typically B-E-A-D-G or E-A-D-G-C, so it's either a 4-string with an additional low B or an additional high C string.

I imagine you can find all the info you need through searches and the FAQs. But, I'll be nice and answer your question.
You're correct with saying the B string (thickest) is not on 4 string basses. The strings are tuned in this order (thickest to thinest):
    B,E,A,D,G.
I recommend you do searches and hit the FAQs though, there's more info in this place than CIA headquaters.
