Okay i play in a drop B tuning with my band which goes B,F#,B,E on my 4 stringer but i am about to purchase a 5 stringer and instead ov dropping the B string down, i was thinking ov keeping the B as a B and tuning everything else up i.e the E to the F#

But i am worried about the neck as i obviously dont want this to bend

I was thinking if i got a low guage string set and tune up this would stop this problem. Am i right??

the bass is a thru neck also if that makes any differance

any help would be much apreciated

You can look at tensions for D'Addario XL strings for different tunings by downloading a pdf from their site. Start by looking at the tension for a 45-105-130 set tuned to standard and sort of use that as your relative starting point for tension.

Off the top of my head I would say buy a 4 string set of 40-100 or 40-95 and buy a 130 B string seperate.
