5 string with a quiet, punch-lacking E string?

I was playing my new-to-me 2009 5 string Corvette yesterday and found the E string lacked punch and volume. Decided to try a string change and in the process I found the tuner tube on that string was quite loose. It will not thread onto the shaft tightly. It acts like it will tighten, but then loosens again, almost like it is stripped. I ordered a new tuner. Will that solve the issue with my E string punch/volume?
