I’m getting ready to commission a Custom Build through Devon Smullen and have narrowed it to a few different top woods. The body will be a Mahogany or Alder with Ebony fretboard. What does the TB world think of these top woods and what would be the better top?

    Afzaila Burl

    Flamed Redwood

    Amboynia Burl

    Buckeye Burl #1

    Highly figured Cocobolo

    Buckeye Burl #2

Wow! First world problems: do I choose stunning piece of wood 1,2,3,4,5, or 6!!

    That’s a hard choice, they’re all beautiful!
I can’t pick one, so I’ll help narrow it. I’d say it’s between:
    Flamed Redwood - just beautiful!
Figured Cocobolo - pretty & unique with light line running parallel to neck
Buckeye Burl #2 - really cool black & white effect.

Good luck! I can’t wait to see this bass!! You can’t go wrong with any of the choices!

  9. I suppose it doesn't matter if you decide to paint the top black. D'oh! :roflmao:

  10. Stuck between the Afzalia, Redwood, and the Amboynia. Really difficult choice you have to make.

I like the Afzalia and Cocobolo best. I'm getting a bit numb to buckeye burl. That's just me.

Lots of great choices and the flamed redwood is beautiful. But the majority of the basses I've thought were the prettiest I've seen seem to have cocobolo tops, so .... cocobolo!

Based on those wood samples in post #1, I'd vote for Flamed Redwood or Amboynia Burl. Based on the finished basses in post #7, I'd just throw a dart or flip a coin, because clearly that luthier is incapable of building anything less than a stellar looking bass!
