Hey guys, I'm not dissing them or anything, I'm just wondering why you guys use them. Is there a whole lot more you can do with them?? Is it so you can play them like a chaoman stick??? I really just don't see the reason for all the strings. Keep in mind I have nothing against them I really am just wondering...

its not so much that there are 5 extra notes for me personaly, its the fact that the note placement in the upper register is much more accesable. and there are a whole new world of harmonics available.

I played a 7 string for just under a year, and icouldnt get lined up with both hands, i constantly got lost, and never felt comfortable on it. 4 strings feel very limiting even though i can fly arround on a well setup one, 5 strings just seem unbalanced and i always run out of room when i play higher.

So 6 just felt natural, espicaly the yamahas i got. the 19mm string spacing plays like a 4 string that was my first bass, and the neck feels like my 7 string that i was already used to. so it just worked out very well

PLEASE do a search man, This topic has been disucssed at GREAT length REPEATEDLY here on the forums. The threads usually do not end well as tempers will flare VERY quickly when someone inevitably posts a poorly worded opinion.

Compared to my 4-strings with 24 frets:
I have 5 extra high notes and 5 extra low notes.
I'm able to play it with less position shifts.
I'm able to play my lines more 'vertically'. This makes it easier for me to sing and play.

I've listened to some audio files from a few fellow TBer's who are using "Chapman Stick-ish" techniques, and are really pushing the boundries on 6+ stringed basses. :bassist: Really cool stuff.

I play mine in pretty much the same manner as I do my 4-strings.
.....But I'm trying to improve! :D

You can't really search for 6 strings when "6", "six", "string", and "bass" are all excluded from the search as they are mundayne words.

Jaco did WAY MORE for bass than Victor...

A quote from victor wooten, "The day I heard jaco was the day I became a different bassist"

    IMHO Victor's "Best" quote.
