6 string bassist

Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by gstbass, Oct 29, 2005.

  1. Hey, I'm looking for some bass players that really "utilize" the 6 string bass. Sort of like how Victor Wooten uses the 4 string, but with a 6er.

Also, I'm looking for some tapping bassists somewhat along the lines of Michael Manring. Or just tell me where to find some of Jean Baudin's stuff!!

    Thanks in advance...

I made a thread about this a while ago. The consensus seemed to be:

    Anthony Jackson
    Oteil Burberidge
    Les Claypool
    Jojo Garza (Los Lonely Boys)

There was a few other, but I can't remember them off the top of my head right now.

    Jojo Garza.

I've only heard a track or two on the radio. What's his playing like?

It's solid, but he throws in some higher melodic stuff too. Great singer as well!

I always felt like 6-string bass playing was kind of lame until tonight. I saw Oteil Burbridge on BET Jazz jamming with his brother Kofi, Derek Trucks, Vernon Reid, Jeff Coffin, and some drummer whose name escapes me but was magnificent, and I have never heard a 6-stringer utilize chords and tight grooving basslines quite as well as Oteil. For the first time in my life, I'm actually considering getting one. Won't get one of those high priced Foderas, but I could be talked into getting a Hohner like the guy in Los Lonely Boys uses. Now I just have to do two things...find a reason for needing one (I really don't need one at all), and talk my wife into letting me take $800 of the money we were going to spend on overhauling the lawn.

I think the outcome is predictable, though. Oh well, she didn't complain when I got an upright, so I'll let her have this one.

That might have been Yonrico Scott... He is real amazing, and has a great voice. The full-time bassist for the Derek Trucks Band is also an amazing 6 string player as well, Todd Smallie.

When Derek is on the road with the Allmans, Todd, Kofi and Yonrico gig around as the Yonrico Scott Band.

... All are top notch players!

Just got Los Lonely Boys' disc. Sounds pretty groovy. I'm actually surprised that I like this stuff. Bought it because I read an interview of JoJo Garza from Bassguitar magazine.
