Ogling some pre-CBS Fenders online the other day, I got thinking – isn't it kinda lame that the 62 Reissue Jazzes don't come with the 1960-63 style adjustable felt mutes? No sign of them whatsoever... not even mock screw holes. Sure it's a niche thing – and I can fully see not putting them on modern production line models – but isn't the whole concept of a "reissue" to celebrate all the quirks and particularities of a specific model year? Heck, they go as far as to include the external grounding strip from the bridge pickup to the bridge; don't tell the mutes aren't as iconic of that era (and a whole lot more functional) than that little piece of copper. Ugh, ok. Rant over.
The mutes were included as a kit with my 1989 62 RI, but Fender left the choice up to the user whether to drill the holes and install them. It was the same with the bridge cover. It was included, but the holes were not drilled.
My '64 CS Fender J came with them, not installed but in a package like that^ I wasnt drilling my bass for something id use 1% of the time
Is that a passenger is called once they've deplaned from an aircraft? BTW, my '03 came with the mutes.
Ah, so the deal here is that they come with them uninstalled... and most folks just don't install them. I've never bought an AVRI so I wouldn't know
As shown in my earlier post, there was a template included in the mute kit. The screws are placed about halfway between the bridge pickup and the bridge plate. I'm all for vintage correctness, but I suspect the reason most people don't install them is because they look horrible. Definitely not one of Leo's better designs, although he later improved the concept on the Stingray.
I bought a 1962 AVRI in 2013 from Music Store Live and they came. On a bag with the bridge and pickup covers
Thanks that's the first time I've seen a picture of them installed I have a kit somewhere I'll probably just give it away when I find it.
My 2009 j came with them. Never installed them but use a piece of dish sponge at the bridge when using the ashtrays.
