I played a 1962 Fender Jazz Reissue today. That is the version with concentric volume and tone knobs. I noticed that the bass had higher and more brittle top end with both tone controls maxed than a typical Jazz, that said, it is a great player, and the tone was beautiful with the treble rolled off.

Your description is spot-on in my opinion. Just sold mine recently (shouldn't have!) and never was a big fan of that top end but it had a ballsy tone that was unlike my other Jazz basses. Cool bass for sho'.
