Hi there! I just got a P-Bass which I bought as made in 1973. The serial number on the neck plate says 39xxxx. I have a Jazz Bass that has a neck plate with 38xxxx and all other facts (pots, neck heel stamp) prove that it is made in '73. But on this P-Bass, the neck heel stamp says 0103 (P-Bass, fretted maple neck with skunk stripe), followed by 3653 (36th week of 1975, 3rd day of the week, correct?) So, it's pretty safe to say that the neck plate isn't the original one, or, that the neck isn't the one that had been originally attached to this body, right? Greets, Michael
What tuners does it have? You can't really date with the neckplate, since they were for grabs in a big bin, and workers took them "at random" when they were assembling an instrument. I've seen L-serials as late as 1966, and pre-L serials as late as '63. Dating can be done via the potmeter codes (137 XXYY (XX=week, YY=year)) and the date on the pickups. 390000 is fairly high in the 300000 range, is entirely possible that the neckplate is original to the bass, and it is a 1975 instrument.
Here is a pic of the tuners. Other than that, I just discovered that the screw holes for the thumb rest is between the PU and the neck heel, the position that had been introduced by 1975, right? Note that the pick guard and pots aren't original.
Ah, there is an open routing between the pickupcavity & the controlcavity, that's also from 1974 and later, so... Safe to say the body is a '75. Tuners are the ones used between 1968 & 1975, so that's also correct.
I don't, the bass plays great and sounds fantastic, plus, 1975 is my birth year. ;-) But a wrong neck plate would create a bit of a bitter taste. The bass costed 1.500$, that's still ok for '75 P-Bass in that shape.
This is not relevant but I will state it anyway. I bought a used bass and used amp in the early 80s for $200 and $200 for the amp. The amp was an Acoustic with a 2x15 cab. The bass was a blonde tele. This was from a local music store and this bass and amp really had no nostalgic value then. I bought it because I needed a bass, it was cheap, and, it worked. Never really gigged with it though and kept moving it around through life. A few years ago I began getting back into music and still did not like the tele. I did notice it seemed to have more value than when I purchased it. I eventually traded it in something newer that was better. The irony is that when I sold it the buyers (known experts, ha ha) disassembled it. They were convinced it was a 73 but of course they were incorrect. It was likely assembled in early 73. They recently marketed it as a 72 Imagine that. Btw, that bass was way over rated. The bass was not versatile and the neck was the size of a 2x4. Still would not be worth $200 to me.
Thanks a lot for your help and your answers! Now, I'll have to find out which strings I like the best on this bass! ;-)
Cool bass! If the pickup is original check the pickup bottom for date, the last two numbers indicate year.
