70's Prog Rock

Discussion in 'Recordings [BG]' started by Matthew_84, Feb 21, 2016.

  1. 70's Prog Rock is probably my favourite era of music. I love Rush, King Crimson, and Yes. While catching up on some work, I youtubed Jethro Tull, and while a song or two wasn't overtly prog, most of it was and I really digged everything I heard from them. I'm definitely going to get some of their stuff, but it made me wonder what else I'm missing out on...

Does anyone have any recommendations for some other Prog Rock bands from that era, or other bands (even modern ones) that play that style?

That's all great stuff, but a whole different genre than "70s prog rock."

I've been on a bit of a self-appointed mission to find the contemporary acts that are still carrying the torch of 70s Prog Rock. It's been an interesting exercise, partly because A) in the 70s the better Prog acts actually got some (gasp!) airplay, whereas now nothing even vaguely Prog-like is making it within a parsec of the Top 100; and B) the democratization of music via the internet almost yields too many options, regardless of how obscure the genre.

That being said, I've found a few modern Prog acts that appeal to my sensibilities -- for point of reference, in the 70s I loved Yes, Gentle Giant, and King Crimson, but I hated Genesis, Rush, and ELP.

    Check out:

    - 05Ric
    - Birds and Buildings

Somehow they always get lumped in there during the "high end music" conversations :)
