78 Precision Sounding a Little Dull....

  1. .... Someone like to suggest something to 'liven up' my ash bodied maple neck 1978 Precision? Its got the stock pickup in it and does sound a bit less bright with roundwounds than others ive played, perhaps a bit lacking in the upper mids??

Not a fan of those late 70's pickups, either. I use an EMG Geezer Butler in mine. Don't know if it would be the answer to the lack of brightness because they're not the brightest P pickup I ever used...that would be the 62 Original...but they're bright enough for me and the mids are stronger than most. The 62 Original is pretty much all treble, high upper mids, and low lows, though it loses some oomph in the mid mids. Always a trade-off to be had in pickup design.

  3. Is this the pickup that sells now as the
    Fender Original Precision Bass Pickup??

    Not sure.

  5. Several years ago, my Old 77 P-Bass was getting abit weak and sounded like I had flat wound strings, instead of round wounds. I replaced them with OE Fender Pickups and it came back to life.

  6. I may just try some stock Precision PU's!

  7. It's worth a try. I also swapped out my standard bridge for the Bad-Ass II.

  8. Ive found that strings can be some of the cheapest things to try first, but even Roto 66's haven't given it the bite of my MIM 50's Precision??!!
