8 string with P/J pickups?

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by bassbo2112, Apr 18, 2012.

  1. I recently purchased an ESP B208FM 8 string. I noticed this and the other two 8 strings in this price range (Schecter and Dean) all use the same style pickups (ie EMG 35HZ).

I have a fender alder body P Bass with a P/J configuration and was thinking about getting a custom made 8 string neck.

Would the P/J configuration work well for an 8 string? Would it be able to bring out those octave strings? The other question is do you need active electronics to bring out those octaves or would passive get the job done?

    Appreciate your thoughts.

    Thanks

I think it's worth a try, if you don't like it you could always put the neck on a different bass.

I have an 8-string that uses two P pickups. Passives are fine, but back when I first built the bass it had DiMarzio Ps, and they were too midrange heavy and lacked low end. The I wound some low impedance pickups, and they sounded a lot better.

I have EMG PJ pickups with a passive tone control in my 8-string and it works great.
