The particular model I'm inquiring about comes with a black headstock, black hardware & no pickguard.

If in fair conditions, would it be good for say, about $400?

I don't know if it's worth 400 or not, but I remember those basses as being Contemporary series basses. I think the whole neck is black; not just the headstock.

If it is in good shape mechanically and cosmetically, it is probably a pretty good buy at $400. (w/ HSC)

In general MIJ fenders were excellent guitars.

Thanks for the replies. This particular one has a plain, clear finished neck (not like some of the Jazz Bass Specials).

It'd definitely be worth that money to me. Those MIJ mid-'80's basses are all very well built and I've yet to play one that didn't sound great ........

Man I woulda loved that thing...I love the looks of Fender basses without pickguards. That's why I'm on the hunt for a black Fender Jazz Special :)
