I've loved the sound of a jaguar for a while. I've been saving for a goal of 1,000 euros and I've reached it. But I've looked all over every store in my region for one and no one has a jaguar to try out. I know their sound but I have no idea if I will like the sound live or the feel so I wanted to try it out. Are there any simular basses? Any bass I just have to try? I plan on going to music shops and try everything I can find so I would like recomendations. Some rock n roll/blues basses with good tonal ranges. Cheers!

  2. Pickup placement isn't quite the same but a Jazz bass is probably the closest thing out there. Be aware that they tend to neck-dive.

  3. Which version of the Jaguar do you like the sound of?

    There are several:

Fender Deluxe Jaguar Bass active JJ
Fender Modern Player Jaguar Bass PJ
Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass PJ
Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special active PJ
Squier Vintage Modified JaguarBass Special HB single humbucker on bridge
Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS short scale PJ
Fender Pawnshop Reverse Jaguar Bass HH

Then you would want a bass that has a P/J pickup configuration with passive electronics. If you like the sound of that Jaguar specifically, you would want to make sure that the bass you find has the same woods and same type of P/J pickups. There are many different type of P/J pickups (alnico, vintage, ceramic, exposed-pole, and many others)

Not quite sure which you mean - there's the Fender Deluxe, which is JJ, or the Fender Modern Player, which is PJ. Those, along with the Pawn Shop Reverse (HH) are the only Fender-badged models, with all the rest being Squiers. And a new Squier 5-string version coming out soon!

And just because you can never see too many Jag pics, here's that new 5er:

The P pup on the Modern Player seems to be a bit farther forward than a regular P/J.

In passive mode, the J/J Jaguar sounds just like a Jazz Bass except you can't blend the pickups. In active, it sounds like a noisy Jazz Bass with a pretty crappy BT EQ. lol

The two MIJ Jaguar J/J basses I have had also neck dived. It's that short horn.

I would just get a Jazz Bass, unless you are absolutely taken by the Jag looks and must have one.
