sorry for double posting. being new here I just became aware that the place to my question was inadequate ... so here it comes again ... if a keen moderator could remove the other other one he's blessed ... --- well, just that: how often do you change your strings of your double bass ... what is the medium life duration of all the different brands out there? do expensive strings have a longer life? I assume that the chords are used ~4h every day with practicing and gigs, my fingers and my brain can't do better than that. what are the tricks to expand the life span, apart from cleaning them with a white cotton glove after you're done?
I typically change my Bel Cantos after 12-18 months of heavy playing. When players change strings can depend on a lot of things--how often and hard they play, the longevity of any given brand of string... Ex. Spirocores have a really long life; most players I know would also add that they take a few months to settle in and sound their best. Conversely, colleagues have told me that Obligatos last less than a year. I think the short answer is that there is no "one size fits all" answer to this question, but more experience and knowledgeable people than me could probably add some more insight.
