In a rare moment of lucidity , and to balance for my very uneven fretless playing, I decided to plug it in to a compressor. Wow... that made a difference (dbx 160A: -10db thresh, 4:1 ratio, attack/release are pre-programmed). Obviously the dynamic is a bit lost but the sound is way better... Am I just re-inventing the wheel here? Comments are welcome. Thanks!
I agree and am geeting back into it. Try different compression settings for different tunes. Heavy compression for louder aggressive tunes and softer compression for slower tunes.
I've been waiting for a single channel Ashly compressor to come along at the right price myself. I always add a touch of compression when I record and I'm finding myself with my first rig in 20 years without a compressor and I miss it a little.
at a ratio of 10:1 you are no longer compressing. dont go above 8:1 if you are wanting to use a hard compression. high ratio and low threshold is hard compression low ratio and high threshold is soft compression Peace
