I'm assuming that you are thinking of combo amps here first of all. It depends upon how much power you want/need. $500 seems to be about what something in the 100-200 watt (give or take some there) range costs new. If you want or need more then you'll have to go used (but then again, used isn't necessarily bad at all). Do a search of the forums and you should turn up lots of threads with some really good info about this.

For new amps: Crate BX-100 runs around a little under $350. You could probably get a Crate BX-160 for under $500 fairly easily if you can find one (160/220 watts). Ampeg makes some good combos that will fit in that range such as the BA-100 (or is it the B-100R? I always get all these model names with B's in them mixed up). Hartke also has some offerings too. Look into Peavey - though I don't like them, I do keep hearing quite a few good things about them.

    http://www.samsontech.com/hartke <-- I think that's correct for Hartke.

Also check out the Workingman's series by SWR - a WM 10 is around $425 or so. You might be able to get a WM 12 if you find the right place. If you're going used, definitely look into the WM 15.

  3. I just purchased a new Eden 600 and will be selling my WM 15. I think it's a great amp for the money...new or used. If you're interested email me...
