An active bass has pickups and/or a preamp that require a power source (typically 9V or 18V), whereas a passive bass does not require a power source. Neither is neccesarily better or worse.

  4. hey, it's not embarassing as trying drop D tuning and tuning UP instead of down, and then the googly eyes you get from the sales people asking you how did you break the old set when you buy new strings.

anyway, a Passive bass requires no electricity to run, while an active bass will have a preamp or "Hot" (or high output) pickups, that require a 9-volt battery (or sometimes even multiple 9-volts) to make the preamps, pickups or whatever work.

    hope that answers your question
