My bass teacher gave my a folder with sheet music to play for this month. I was looking at other music that I was going to learn next week and came to a marcus miller piece and had some double-thumping in it. I just wanted to know from you all how does that actually work.

well your teacher SHOULD teach you that...

so wait for the lesson and ask him about them, because people here will tell you things but if your teacher knows well what hes doing then an actual lesson about it will worth more than anything we could say

He's one of the guys who expanded on that technique, but he didn't invent it.

Lots of bassists and guitarists used it before him, e.g. Stanley Clarke.

Actually, Victor's brother Reggie taught it to him.

The technique's much older than that. Flamenco guitar players have been doing the down-up thumb thing for a while.
